National Association of State Retirement Administrators

Position Information

Junior Portfolio Manager, Alternative Investments (2 Positions)
The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) is a statutory entity established to administer the Educational Employees Retirement Plan (Plan).  The plan is a cost-sharing, multiple-employer pension plan established to provide retirement and disability benefits and services for our more than 163,000 members and 216 public educational employers. The NMERB is overseen by a nine-member Board of Trustees and operates from offices in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The NMERB is a state agency, accountable not only to its members and its board, but also to the Legislature and Governor. It is self-funded through investment income and educational employer and employee contributions, and receives no appropriation from the state’s general fund. Board members and agency personnel pride themselves on a conservative and careful approach to investing, and utilize sound actuarial management, efficient operations, and a member-oriented focus.
The Investment Department of NMERB is comprised of 17 individuals that oversee the approximately $16 billion trust fund.  Recognizing NMERB’s fiduciary responsibilities to the Plan and long-term nature of the pension fund, assets are managed on a total return basis with a long-term objective of achieving and maintaining a fully funded status for the benefits provided through the pension plan. NMERB’s Investment Division seeks to diversify investment assets to both enhance returns and control risk. Over the long term, the fund’s objective is to earn the actuarial rate of return of 7.0%.

The Jr. Portfolio Manager will be an integral part of the investment team, participating in all aspects of the investment process, from initial screening and due diligence, through approval, to post-investment monitoring and reporting. This position demands excellent communications skills, strong analytical insight and spreadsheet modeling skills, an understanding of financial statements, perseverance and creativity in accessing information, and the ability to balance multiple tasks.
