Executive Director
The Executive Director heads the SURS leadership team and is responsible for implementing the pension system’s mission to secure and deliver the retirement benefits promised to its more than 236,000 members worldwide. The Executive Director will fulfill this function through a multi-disciplinary approach including community affairs, government affairs, and stakeholder engagement.

This role leads the System’s efforts to be a low-cost pension service provider, offering differentiation through service delivery, with a focus on education and value creation for members. Importantly, the Executive Director represents SURS and reflects its core values - honesty, professionalism, and ethics. The Executive Director should also recognize the need to embrace and further diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the work.

Requirements Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible not only for the strategic direction of the organization from an investment perspective, but also an operational one. Specific responsibilities for the position are as follows:
  • Provides strategic direction, planning and leadership.
  • Organizes, develops and supervises a management team to provide superior investment results in a risk management environment.
  • Maintains oversight of Investment and Administrative operations conducted at the tactical level by executive staff.
  • Has appointing authority for staff, in partnership with the Board for certain senior level roles.
  • Serves as primary interface with Board of Trustees. Conducts executive and administrative functions of the Board in accord with policies adopted by the Trustees.
  • Lead cross-functional, matrix team to develop and implement solutions that ensure the financial soundness of the System.
  • Achieve high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Cultivate a workplace structured around learning, growth and diversity.
  • Develop and sustain efficient, responsive, high-quality internal processes, tools and technology.
  • Protect SURS assets through sound risk-management and ethical practices.
  • Develop 12-month government relations and public engagement strategy to serve the strategic needs of the System and update annually with guidance from the Board of Trustees
  • Hire and onboard Chief Diversity Officer in year 1, implement DEI goals for SURS staff and supply chain, including investment contracting.
  • Hire and onboard Chief Human Resources Officer following retirement of current CHRO; ensure Human Resources team collaborates effectively with Chief Diversity Officer on hiring and retention plans for staff.
  • Support Information Technology Department as they transition to better data-driven member service platforms.
  • Conduct audit of member education resources and develop new tools accordingly to ensure SURS members are well-informed about System benefits and processes for maximizing same.
