Assistant Director - Retirement Services Division

Reporting to the agency’s Director, the Assistant Director – Retirement Services Division directs and administers all customer service operations for the members, participants and retirees of the retirement systems and plans administered by DRS. The work performed by this position helps ensure our members receive the benefits they earned while in public service.

In a collaborative work environment, you will be responsible for providing exceptional service to the agency, employers, other state agencies, and to active and retired members. You will be responsible for decision making, project management, strategic planning, and performance management for the division.

You will lead and develop team members within the Retirement Services Division and encourage professional, high-quality and customer-focused performance. You will understand work group concerns and problems, facilitate teamwork, encourage open communication and conflict resolution. You will see the value of cultural, ethnic, gender and other individual differences in people and create an environment of learning about, including, valuing, encouraging and supporting difference.

You will build, cultivate and maintain effective, productive working relationships with agency stakeholders, including the legislature, tribes and other entities such as the Select Committee on Pension Policy, Office of the State Actuary, Washington State Investment Board, Law Enforcement Officers’ and Fire Fighters’ Plan 2 Board, the Pension Funding Council, the Advisory Committee, and third party record keepers, that are critical to the agency’s ability to fulfill its mission.

You will also serve as a member of the agency’s Executive Leadership Team to establish policy and formulate the agency’s strategic direction and performance management goals. You will serve as an Executive Sponsor on major agency projects such as the Creating an Outstanding Retirement Experience (CORE) project, working with the project manager to provide clear direction, secure project resources, and ensure the project is on-time, on-budget, and on-scope.

The qualifications for this position include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, or closely allied field;
  • Five years of experience in a leadership position that included oversight and supervision of other managers;
  • Progressive experience in strategic planning, formulating and implementing policies, developing and administering budgets, and change management; and
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the following competency areas:
